Jaksur’s elected leaders take oath after 33 years

Desk Report:

The newly elected leaders of Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JACSU) have officially taken the oath. JACSU President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan administered the oath to them at the university’s Senate Hall on Thursday afternoon.

Family members of martyrs Alif Ahmed Siam and Shravan Gazi, who were killed in the Savar area during the July Movement, and the wife of martyr Mizanur Rahman were present at the time.

At the beginning of the oath-taking ceremony, the Holy Quran, the Holy Gita, the Holy Bible and the Holy Tripitaka were read out. Then, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Assistant Professor Jannatul Ferdous Moumita, who fell ill during the counting of votes in the JACSU election and died in the hospital. After the oath-taking, the Vice-Chancellor welcomed the newly elected representatives with a bouquet of flowers.

At that time, JACSU Election Commission Member Secretary AKM Rashidul Alam said, “Jahangirnagar University has won this election. Every footage of the election is preserved. If anyone wants to challenge the irregularities of the election, we are ready.

‘We have an account of every additional ballot paper that was printed on the occasion of the election. We gave 400 ballots to make a “round figure” in the center where 382 ballot papers were needed. We have an account of the unused ballot papers.’

‘We did not agitate for the implementation of this JACSU to become leaders. We agitated to make that right a reality that the students of this university were deprived of for 33 years. We were able to snatch that right.

‘We have seen that some groups have been trying until the last moment to question the Election Commission to thwart JACSU and ensure that the students do not get their rights back. Till now, there is no shortage of their efforts.

‘We want to say, we will build such a movement against those who will become obstacles against the realization of the rights of the students; which this university has never seen. “Just as I was not afraid of any bloodsucker in the past for the sake of students’ rights, I will not be afraid in the future either.” Newly elected Vice President (VP) of JACSU Abdur Rashid Jitu said, “There was no student representative in the Senate due to the lack of JACSU elections for 33 years. During this time, the Senate session was held properly, but there was no one there to speak on behalf of the students.”
